FOX News is claimed to be right wing, to have a right wing bias. I’m not convinced that they are. Just because an outlet presents and explores right of center positions that others won’t, that doesn’t constitute bias.
I am right of center, have called myself a libertarian leaning conservative but as Black3 points out, to stay true to the language and definitions, I am far more of a a classical liberal than any of the above, so my viewpoint is biased – there is no doubt about that. I freely admit my bias…but I have not seen FOX News cheerlead or work directly for the advancement of any specific conservative or Republican in the years that they have been on air. I do believe that there are media outlets that do directly support positions and people on the left.
What I do see on FOX are conservative/Republican voices being allowed to get airtime and conservative issues being covered. It is my opinion that the absence of same indicates that there is a clear bias in the Alphabet Networks and most of the cable news outlets. Bias by omission is still bias.
FOX News may lean right but if so, CNN is center/left and MSNBC is full-on in the leftist tank.
Thomas Jefferson said:
“The press is the best instrument for enlightening the mind of man, and improving him as a rational, moral and social being”
Biased journalism doesn’t enlighten.
There are journalists on the right – and pardon me for saying, they seem to be the only people interested in asking the follow-up questions and getting at the truth…something that should be the job of all “journalists”. The lack of this initiative and the clear bias (sometimes simply by the things that the establishment press omits) is the reason that people like Andrew Breitbart, Andrew Klavan, Bill Whittle , James O’Keefe and the entire right blogosphere exist.
Objectively compare the reporting on the Tea Party protests and the #OWS “movement”. The Tea Party was vilified as “terrorists” while the #OWS crowd is praised as a pillar of liberty. Remember how the media had a live cow when one Tea Partier showed up with a legal weapon?
Have you heard about the following little insurgency on the nightly news?
Did you happen to catch all the mainstream media rage about this over the last few days and the President’s call for civility?
Yeah, me neither…
Tea Partiers show up with their guns as a sign of protest – not a threat – these goons show up to “defend” the #Occupy crowd? From what – soap and water? Logic? Free enterprise? Why the Hell would they need protection from anyone but themselves?
Give me a freakin’ break. The double standard is appalling.
Clear lies about conservatives like the widely condemned hit piece on rising Republican star Marco Rubio by the Washington Post and this clip of Chris “Tingle” Matthews on MSNBC are why right leaning journalists must exist (via HotAirPundit):
I’m not saying that reporting from either side is wrong, I’m just saying that if you are going to be a leftist media member, a leftist agenda supporter, just come out and own it. Same with the right side of the spectrum.
If you don’t, you are a fraud.
The New York Times fits that definition.
James O’Keefe and his Project Veritas scores yet another hit on a leftist establishment, adding to his list of government and “progressive” scalps. This time it is the New York Times talking openly about how they schemed to get a little known junior senator from Illinois named Barack Obama elected to the Presidency.
I guess we can blame them for the incompetence.
I’m happy that FOX News exists, not because they lean right but because they give an expanded view for us to debate.
I think Thomas Jefferson would agree.

Wait, there is STILL a debate about whether or not Pravda West is biased??? I thought those people went away with the commies and the old Soviet Union (think about that one for a second or two…;-) )
It is a sad commentary on the intellectual state of our nation when a network that takes pains to at least attempt to offer both sides to a story is labeled “right wing.” That alone is sufficient to condemn the “Lame Stream” or govt. controlled media.
Nice post, M.
Agreed, utah, but my mistrust of ALL media extends to FOX as well. All media serves two gods, their sponsors and their viewer/subscriber base. This is a mutually incestuous group. FOX has to have the viewer base (ratings) to support their sponsors, the sponsors have to have the viewer base to purchase their products (dollars), and the viewer base has to have the programming they desire or they won’t watch (no ratings, no dollars). The sponsors somewhat control what the network airs, directly or indirectly, or they pull their dollars.
FOX seems to do a better job of presenting both sides than CNN. The major “free” networks; ABC, CBS, NBC wouldn’t know what fair, unbiased reporting is.
That’s why I value them. If you have two different waypoints, you can calculate an accurate vector. Takes two points to make a line, the truth will lie somewhere on that line…maybe not on those two points, but somewhere…
A single point indicates no direction…
I agree. You can’t totally believe one or the other, but when you factor in all of the information provided, you can draw a relatively informed conclusion.
So, how “cold war era” Ruskie are we all feeling given these revelations?
