Voting “Present” in the Middle East

Mahmood I’mADinnerJacket and the Mad Mullahs are getting a little taste of what the Egyptian people whipped up for Mubarak.

Iran’s Forces Battle Protests Nationwide

For a second time in a week, Iran’s opposition drew tens of thousands of supporters to the streets across the nation on Sunday calling for the end to the Islamic Republic’s rule.

In response, the government unleashed what witnesses said was an extraordinary number of security forces to violently battle the crowds. Witnesses said mobs of anti-riot police and plainclothes Basij militia lined the streets and on several occasions fired directly into the crowd and beat protesters with steel batons. In one neighborhood, the Basij took over a commercial building and dropped tear gas canisters from the roof onto the protesters, witnesses said.

Col. Kadafy Quadufi Godhafi Qaddafi in Libya is feeling the heat as well…literally:
Protesters and security forces battled in the center of Tripoli as anti-government unrest spread to the Libyan capital and Moammar Gadhafi’s son went on state television to proclaim that his father remained in charge with the army’s backing and would “fight until the last man, the last woman, the last bullet.”

Even as Seif al-Islam Gadhafi spoke Sunday night, clashes were raging in and around Tripoli’s central Green Square, lasting until dawn Monday, witnesses said. They reported snipers opening fire on crowds trying to seize the square, and Gadhafi supporters speeding through in vehicles, shooting and running over protesters. Early Monday, protesters took over the office of two of the multiple state-run satellite news channels, witnesses said.

More at The Other McCain.

As much as I would like to see these clowns bite the big one, I worry about what fills the void and the fact that our foriegn policy folks 1) didn’t see any of this coming, 2) did nothing to help the people who want freedom 3) have yet to recover with any sort of remedial actions.

We have lost a lot of influence due to Bam’s Worldwide Apology Tour but we need to try to influence what direction these revolts take. There was a time our State Department understood that they were there to do things that benefit the interests of the United States.

Maybe we should spend a little less time helping Susan Rice craft condemnations of Israel at the UN and more time working to prevent the creation of some new enemies.

Great job Hillary. Voting present just like your boss.
