The Southern Poverty Law Center Hearts Obama

The Southern Poverty Law Center, the radical left wing group that condemns any group that is not in lock step with the “progressive” agenda as a “hate group”, is in full tune-up mode for the election. ABC News dutifully reports comments from the SPLC as gospel without challenge:

The number of radical hate groups and militias has exploded in recent years in reaction to the changing makeup of America, and new census figures showing the majority of babies born in 2011 were non-white could fuel those simmering tensions, experts who track hate groups warned.

“White supremacist groups have been having a meltdown since the census bureau predicted that non-Hispanic whites would lose the majority by 2050,” said Mark Potok, spokesman for the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups. “The demographic change in this country is the single most important driver in the growth of hate groups and extremist groups over the last few years.”

The data released this week revealed a tipping point in the country’s demographic shift. For the first time in the country’s history, more minority children were born than white children, setting the stage for an eventual non-white majority in America’s population.

The census found that 50.4 percent of births in 2011 were of Hispanic, black, Asian, and other minority children. White babies accounted for 49.5 percent of the country’s newborns.

In addition, more than 49 percent of all children under 5 years old are minorities, the report said.

For white supremacist and radical right-wing groups, the data is especially troubling, and made all the more apparent by the fact that a black man was elected president, Potok said.

So what data supports the SPLC claims? Conveniently, it is their own because that is all that is offered…and the “fact” that it is all because a black man was elected president is an opinion, not an actual fact.

“This very real and very significant change is represented in the person of Barack Obama. We’ve of course seen the most remarkable growth in the radical right since 2008, precisely coinciding with Obama’s first three years as president,” he said.

According to the SPLC, the number of radical “anti-government” militia groups increased from 150 to 1,274 during the years of the Obama presidency. There have been more homegrown domestic terrorism attacks by right-wing groups than by international terrorists during his presidency as well, Potok noted.

Marilyn Mayo, co-director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism, said white supremacist groups have increased their efforts to recruit and plot based on the changing racial makeup of America.

“I think that what we’re seeing is that hate groups, particularly white supremacist groups, are talking a lot about the fact that whites will soon be a minority in this country, that their goal at all costs is to preserve the white race in civilization, which spurs them to recruit more, and have more incendiary rhetoric,” Mayo said.

Wouldn’t you expect that if these “hate groups” had increased so much that the reported crimes would also correspondingly have increased? I went to the FBI website to check and found that the total number of “hate” crimes has actually been decreasing and that decline has continued during the Obama years.

Remember that the SPLC lists groups like the Family Research Council, Concerned Women for America, the National Organization for Marriage, traditional Catholics, and the Federation for American Immigration Reform, several Tea Party groups, Ron Paul and Judge Andrew Napolitano as dangerous “extremists”, so it is pretty clear where they are coming from.

Nothing but lazy, sloppy and agenda driven “journalism” from ABC News and pure partisan hackery on the part of the SPLC.

  1. And yet the Sothern Poverty Law Center also lists groups such as the new black panter party, nation of islam, national black foot soldier network, Israelite church of god in jesus christ (despite the name a black separtist group), All Eyes on Egipt, …to name a few

And I would say the chart showing a decline in the number of “hate crimes” only tells part of the story. We have seen a general decline in crime- especially violent crime, over the same time period. (my initial research indicates it has dropped at a greater rate then hate crimes- but this is VERY cursory). It also would appear that with the passage in more and more states of “hate crime” laws the numper of crimes prosecuted, or recorded as hate crimes has dropped. Whether this is a chilling effect of the laws, prosecutors unwilling to try cases under the different burdens of a hate crime law when they get more easily win conviction under more general laws, an unwillingness of prosecutors to persue as hate crimes for political reasons, an actual drop in hate crimes, or some other, or some combination of the above…is beyond my scope to research. There are also some indications that the FBI has largely stopped counting the killing of illegal immigrants near the borders as a hate crime. (which you may or may not agree with- but likely has an effect on the downward numbers).

But from my own personal experience- I have seen an explosion of expressions of hate on the web in the past couple of years. And while I can’t find it quickly there is a story out there somewhere with data from Google on the stunning spike in the use of racist and religion biased words over the past two years (shockingly anti muslim terms were higher then in the period after 9/11.

  2. I’m sure this has nothing to do with it:

‘Not Really Set Up to Cover the Extreme Left’: Southern Poverty Law Center Explains Why it Doesn‘t Track Occupy as a ’Hate Group’

Cooke’s question to an SPLC representative was straightforward — “Do you have any plans to start tracking Occupy Wall Street after a hate group tried to blow up a bridge?”:

“No, I don’t think so,” he said. “We blogged it right away when it happened.” I asked him why he thought this deserved only a blog post, and he explained that the SPLC only deals with “hatred of people based on class characteristics,” which a little more pushing revealed meant “immutable characteristics such as a person’s eye or skin color.” “So,” I asked, “Occupy doesn’t count because it doesn’t hate people based on their innate characteristics?” He assented, but didn’t explain adequately why SPLC is vocal on “Islamophobia,” for example — whatever Islam is, it is not an “immutable” characteristic — and why it concerns itself with matters of traditionalist Catholic theology.

  3. Yeah, the Tea Party and those crazy Catholics. DEFINITELY the folks that are most likely to try to smuggle a bomb on board a plane, or maybe even try to blow up a bridge.

    Oh, wait…..

  4. Here’s the deal. People like the SPLC, Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson and others of their ilk are the very people who are instigating the supposed ramp up in so called White Supremists groups. Every time one of those brain dead f^#ks opens his mouth, another person or persons think maybe they’ll check out one of those groups just to see what they’re about.

The SPLC and others aren’t about ending racism…they’re all about gaining an advantage for Blacks, and more recently, Hispanics and Muslims, over everyone else. It’s all about the money or greed and envy.
