Want More Crime? Ban Guns Like Australia Did

Via Instapundit:

WANT MORE VIOLENT CRIME AGAINST CITIZENS? Then ban guns like Australia did. “So, if the USA follows Australia’s lead in banning guns, it should expect a 42 percent increase in violent crime, a higher percentage of murders committed with a gun, and three times more rape.”

Plus: “The International Crime Victims Survey, conducted by Leiden University in Holland, found that England and Wales ranked second overall in violent crime among industrialized nations. Twenty-six percent of English citizens — roughly one-quarter of the population — have been victimized by violent crime. Australia led the list with more than 30 percent of its population victimized. The United States didn’t even make the ‘top 10′ list of industrialized nations whose citizens were victimized by crime.”

  1. In 2010, the US, 67.5% of murders were committed with firearms as compared to 16% in Australia in 2006 (latest figures that I can find). The antipodeans have a long way to go to catch up with us.
Plus, your title is misleading, as not all guns were banned, only certain types, and People can still get a license for a gun to keep in the home as well as for hunting. Plus Australia never had the absolute freedom to own guns that we have in this country.. Apples and oranges.

    • So, I feel comfortable in saying that 100% of those 67% were committed by criminals. These are the people who don’t care what the laws are. The only thing gun control does is disarm law abiding citizens.

      • I believe we can agree on that point, Utah, although I am uncertain as to what percentage were professional criminals, and how many were amateurs.
Have you by any chance ever read ‘The Fatal Shore’? It is the story of the settling of Australia by convicts from England’s debtor prisons and prison ships anchored in the Thames. An appalling litany of native extermination and accounts of whippings that literally took the meat off the bones. It is a wonder that a) so many survived the first years, and b) that their crime rate is as low as it is. Maybe they are from such tough stock that fewer residents look like prey compared to our society. There may be a lesson in there somewhere….
