In his book “Civil liberties and industrial conflict”(1938), Roger Nash Baldwin, one of the founders of the ACLU has the following to say: (page 3) (Alt. Link)
For while civil liberties to speak, publish, and assemble may justly be regarded as desirable ends in themselves, they are also the means for non-violent progress.
While I have for almost twenty years been associated with a movement which defends without discrimination the liberties set forth in the Bill of Rights, I cannot escape a personal interpretation of the relation of liberty to economics. Many defenders of civil rights on principle are content to accept them without defining progress. I am not. My frame of reference requires a concept of progress. In general terms, it is the extension of the control of social institutions by progressively larger classes, until human society ultimately abolishes the violence of class conflict. The test of that progress lies in increasing freedom for the enrichment of individual life. Democracy and civil liberty are means to that end. So, too, is the organization of labor.
Wow. Anybody who’s read Rules for Radicals can’t help but observe the inner Alinsky that’s on display here.
In order to understand what’s written here, it’s important to understand the code words used. When progressives talk about “democracy”, they don’t simply mean taking it to the voting booth, and the majority wins. It’s a purely governmental thing. They do to a small degree, to be sure. But what they mean by “democracy” is socialism.

Remember where we have heard Roger Nash Baldwin’s name before?
Then, just as today, the “progressives” were seemingly so enamored with the Marxist approach to economics and society that they simply could not acknowledge the damage that a Marxist state must vest on its people to make it “work”. Roger Nash Baldwin, the founder of the ACLU, was part of a junket of very influential men who travelled to Russia in 1927 to experience the glory of the Marxist revolution. Ninety-five people paid the princely sum of $1,000 to take part and all were associated with liberal causes and ideas. These individuals would come to significantly influence American policy and politicians and along with Baldwin, included people like Stuart Chase, Rexford Tugwell, John Brophy and Paul Howard Douglas.
Perhaps unintentionally ironic, Baldwin wrote this in support of the “successes” that he saw:
Everybody is poor together. There is much discontent, much regulation of life, but not much terrorism or repression except of the old upper classes.
“Progressives” – the name may change but the game remains the same.

BTW: I will be addressing the Progressive notion of “progress” and “democracy” shortly, but first, I have to establish and explain how language is viewed by Progressives so that people will start learning to understand that – though they use the same words – Progressives do not mean the same things we understand when they use those words. I have to prove that there is a code being used, that it is intended to deceive and explain how to spot and interpret it.
Next in the series: Dewey, Lippmann and more Bernays and Lakoff. Fun-fun, to be sure – but necessary to understating what is happening in our political arena today.

Poverty
Discontent
Terrorism, &
Repression?
These people came home to America excited and set to work to create this UTOPIA here in America?
Emulating these kinds of societies is PROGRESS?

Yes, shared misery among everyone not in THEIR own elite group. THE self appointed ELITES plan everyone else’s lives for the ELITE’S benefit.
Joe: Except its not really code. They simply have a completely different lexicon where words like democracy, liberty and freedom have a completely different meaning than traditionally understood. It is just that people refuse to believe them when they say what they mean because in general, people don’t want to believe it. Baldwin was given the Medal of Freedom by, you guessed it…Jimmy Carter in 1981 even after being quoted as saying:
Your work is important – I can tell by the amount of squealing from Professor “Progressive” and his Merry Comrades.
I know, sadly, I know. I just wish people would understand that all these supposed “social justice” types really want is to rule the world. they NEVER — and I mean NEVER see THEIR rules as applying to THEM – EVER! They just want to make us all serfs so they can have their fiefdom back.
Sadder still, they play of the inner greed and envy of those who would sell themselves into slavery never understanding that, should they actually be given the goose that lays the golden eggs, they would just eat it because they have no concept of what it takes to make wealth – only how to consume it. In the end, the whole world would end up poor under the socialists – even them.
Um, I’ve kinda had to be surrounded by twins my entire life, so if B. has a twin, I’m movin to Costa Rica.

If Obama gets re-elected, I may have no other choice but to move there.

Ahh…Stuart Chase. I knew that name sounded familiar. He wrote a book called ” A New Deal” outlining his vision of an ideal government. FDR used his book title as a rallying cry after his election. He named Chase to the National Resources Commission. Chase is given credit for banning ownership of gold by American citizens.
Stuart Chase also said that people who worked for profit needed to be shot by firing squad.

I have one more post on the importance of language in the Progressive mind before I start taking Lakoff’s “Little Blue Book” apart. When we do, one of the first chapters we will cover explains how we conservatives are permanently and irreversibly “defective” in our neurological make up — at least, we are according to Lakoff. We will then trace the origins of this sort of thinking – and examine the atrocities that statists have committed as a result.
Can you please not make it 3 miles long? Perhaps you could break it up into segments, so I can get through it without having to nap. And please, please, PLEASE, don’t give us another Super Bowl Points to Ponder post. I thank you.

I do the best I can, but this is NOT 30-second-sound-bite stuff — and that is part of their method: to make things so complicated people like you won’t bother trying to understand it.
The best I can tell you is to either get a cup of coffee and work your way through the posts in this series or just don’t read them because they are already broken down. If I shorter them any more, it will just give more ammunition to people like your friend, James, because I will have to leave more holes than I am already accepting.
