Statolatry: The Liberal Religion

Dennis Prager brings together our themes of argument from authority, total subservience to government and antipathy toward God to confirm my assertion that what we are seeing with liberals is, in fact, the creation of a “progressive” religion, something that Ludwig von Mises termed statolatry (via Ed Driscoll):

You cannot understand the Left if you do not understand that leftism is a religion. It is not God-based (some left-wing Christians’ and Jews’ claims notwithstanding), but otherwise it has every characteristic of a religion. The most blatant of those characteristics is dogma. People who believe in leftism have as many dogmas as the most fundamentalist Christian.

One of them is material equality as the preeminent moral goal. Another is the villainy of corporations. The bigger the corporation, the greater the villainy. Thus, instead of the devil, the Left has Big Pharma, Big Tobacco, Big Oil, the “military-industrial complex,” and the like. Meanwhile, Big Labor, Big Trial Lawyers, and — of course — Big Government are left-wing angels.

And why is that? Why, to be specific, does the Left fear big corporations but not big government?

The answer is dogma — a belief system that transcends reason. No rational person can deny that big governments have caused almost all the great evils of the last century, arguably the bloodiest in history. Who killed the 20 to 30 million Soviet citizens in the Gulag Archipelago — big government or big business? Hint: There were no private businesses in the Soviet Union. Who deliberately caused 75 million Chinese to starve to death — big government or big business? Hint: See previous hint. Did Coca-Cola kill 5 million Ukrainians? Did Big Oil slaughter a quarter of the Cambodian population? Would there have been a Holocaust without the huge Nazi state?

The left is right when they say that we can’t call them communists or socialists – because that isn’t what they are.

These people, including our own melfamy, are not Marxists, they are simply practitioners of statolatry. If they were good little Marxists, they would be organizing work camps for the poor and unemployed instead of demanding that “the rich” pay them to sit on their asses. Any good commie knows that everybody must work for the glory of the state – even if they have to be forced to do so.

At its root, it isn’t about collectivism or communism for them, it is about worship for the state to replace a God that they have rejected, some entity more powerful than themselves that they can swear their fealty to in order to receive blessings…crumbs from the table…as long as it isn’t God.

  1. John Dewey openly said it: the goal is to usher in the new kingdom of god — the secular humanist religion whose god is man, himself.

The name is escaping me, but there was another very influential but lesser known founder of the American Progressive movement who openly stated that man can become god.

If you just watch how they act, it is not difficult to see that these people DO believe they can elevate themsleves to the position of gods.

      • Augger,

Yeah, either that, or I SUCK at names and have been reading too much lately — it’s certainly one of the two. (But I know exactly where to go in Pestrito’s book to find the essay, which has the guilt culprit’s name on it — so I MUST be a racist white guy after all 😉 )
