Orwell Lives

Her Majesty’s Revenue Service (the UK version of the IRS) will now be looking at your credit report to see if you pay enough tax (even if you are an American living in the UK as I am, of course). Big Brother is in the house

Credit reference agencies will cross-check details of the income people declare on their tax returns against their spending patterns to identify “high” and “medium” risks of both illegal and legal tax avoidance.

People identified to HM Revenue and Customs will then be subject to more detailed investigations. About two million people are expected to be scrutinised under the programme, which may lead to privacy concerns.

HMRC will today unveil the “successful” results of a pilot programme involving about 20,000 people which will now be extended nationally.

Many of those who are expected to be identified are likely to be self-employed workers who have under-declared their income to the authorities.

However, those who have benefited from secret windfalls – such as an inheritance or a bonus – and people with secret offshore accounts could also be highlighted.

How long before some “progressive” nutter in Congress thinks this is a good idea? The power to tax is the power to destroy. This and the current press restrictions that are being debated over here are living examples of how socialist, even democratic socialist, societies eventually slide toward totalitarianism and tyranny.

Even without the traditional annoying questions from journalists — which were banned — Lord Justice Leveson sounded a little tetchy when releasing his report on Thursday. Perhaps he already knew what was about to happen to it.

Exactly 78 minutes after the judge finished speaking, David Cameron, the Prime Minister, told MPs he could not accept the central demand, for what Lord Justice Leveson called the “voluntary independent self-regulation” of the press, with a law — a “statutory underpinning” — to lay down the broad principles that the “independent self-regulator” must follow.

The danger in this, said Mr Cameron, would be the creation of “a vehicle for politicians … to impose regulation and obligations on the press”.

Can’t happen in America? We already have Democrat Congressman Hank “Guam will flip over” Johnson calling for free speech curbs.

Just trust them, we are told.

Yeah, right.

  1. Yes sir, sure starts getting tight on the ole Free Sh*t Army when the money starts to run out, and you have already taxed the rich to oblivion. In the South, we call that “scraping the bottom of the barrel”.

The parasite has started looking for the “crumbs”.

  2. Orwell is DA MAN! He told us what was coming — even what it would look like. We even used to teach it to our kids as a WARNING! Now, if they teach it at all, they teach it as the model of a “progressive” society. Just a few of his pearls of wisdom:

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

The Party is not interested in the overt act. The thought is all we care about.

If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face, forever.

In times of universal deceit, telling the truth will be a revolutionary act.

    • “In times of universal deceit, telling the truth will be a revolutionary act.”

I’ve been experiencing that all my life.

How naive of me to think, when asked, someone really wants to hear the truth…

      Sometimes I wonder why I care. . .
