I have cited this passage of scripture many times:
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
Who [a]substitute darkness for light and light for darkness;
Who [b]substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes
And clever in their own sight!
Looking back, I suppose I have never really explained what this means – at least, what it means to me. Let me use a story to illustrate what this passage means to me:
After discussing comments from Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas) — Reid saying she is “frightened” that the representative is an OB/GYN that treats women — Reid said:
“It’s so disconnected from the political reality that Republicans face. Republicans face a tremendous deficit with women voters, and so they keep putting on this spectacle over and over and over again…
“They’re obsessed with this idea of making women — this isn’t pro-life; this is forced birth. They are obsessed with this notion of shaming, compelling, coercing, whatever they have to do to make women give birth.
“It’s bizarre, but it is what they are about. Most of the legislation that these members of the House of Representatives — mostly all men — have put forward have been about abortion.” [Emphasis added]
Now, let me first say that I recognize there are many sides to this issue, but I want to focus on the language and reasoning. Reid provides us with an excellent example of how people convince themselves that their twisting of logic is “intelligence,” and how they then use it to turn reality on its head. What many in our society no longer understand is that intelligence is of little account without the understanding that comes from wisdom. Without wisdom, intelligence is little more than a blunt tool. In the hands of a foolish person, their pride and arrogance too easily convinces them that the blunt tool they hold magically transforms them into a master craftsman. It doesn’t: it just illuminates their foolishness to those who actually do understand.
Let me drive the point home a bit. Look at the definition of abortion:
1: the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus: as
a : spontaneous expulsion of a human fetus during the first 12 weeks of gestation — compare miscarriage
b : induced expulsion of a human fetus
c : expulsion of a fetus by a domestic animal often due to infection at any time before completion of pregnancy — compare contagious abortion
3: arrest of development (as of a part or process) resulting in imperfection; also : a result of such arrest
Notice how the very word implies the ending of a natural process. In the case of pregnancy, the natural assumption is that a child will be born unless something stops it. So, to argue that “pro-choice” means the forcing of something that would naturally happen without intervention is to turn the meaning of the words we use on their heads. What’s more, this cannot be argued. This is all based on definition which, according to the rules of basic logic, means this is objective fact. When we start trying to “spin” or twist our understanding of the words to alter our recognition of this fact destroys the foundation of language and places us firmly in the condemnation of Isaiah 5:20-21.
Now, let me connect this to the law. If we do this same thing to the law – spin and twist it to suit our agenda rather than the original intention of the law – we destroy the foundations of the law as surely as twisting definitions destroys the foundation of language. And, if the foundations of the law are destroyed, what are the law-abiding supposed to do?
The Lord a Refuge and Defense.
3: If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?”
[I can only hope that you can see how this is connected to our cultural attitude toward truth, to morality, to our language, our law and to tyranny. Look to history. You will find that this is the pattern and it repeats over and over again: as a culture becomes corrupt, it collapses into anarchy or tyranny. Turning our language, laws, and heritage/customs/traditions on their head is anarchy. If we do not correct it, it will open the door to tyranny.]
