Why I Insist on Making the NAZI Connections

“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

I have now had several close friends question my stance on my comparison of modern America to 1930’s Germany.  In some cases, I think my friends simply do not believe the comparison is accurate.  I don’t think they see it.  However, in most cases, I understand that they think I am alienating myself: losing potential audience by taking too strong of a stance.  They believe the stigma of NAZI Germany is too ostracizing, and that I turn people off by using it.  I understand that my friends’ reasoning, and that their advice is born of love and concern.  They think I could be more effective if I moderate my message and my stance because I will reach more people.  Sadly, I just can’t do that.

The older I get, the more I seek the truth (as best any man can find and understand it), and the truth is, the closest modern comparison to what is happening in the United States today is found in the history of 1930’s Germany.  In large part, this is because the people who led Germany down the road into darkness held the same general ideology and goals as those who are leading America down that path today.  The American Progressive movement was born of the same general movement that spawned the Fascist movement.  But we do not realize this today because we do not know our history.  And we do not know history because Progressives have erased it as part of their method for attaining their goals.  So, if I were to take my friends’ advice and avoid the connection between modern America and 1930’s Germany, I would actually be helping the evil that has been leading us down the path to darkness.

If I were to explain modern America in terms of 1930’s Germany without actually voicing the connection, too few would recognize the real picture I was painting because too few know and understand the picture.  Seriously, how many people still think Fascism is a form of “Right-wing” government?  It isn’t.  But try to explain that to people and see how far you get. So, if the majority of Americans do not know that NAZI means national socialists, and that this makes Fascism a Left-wing government, why would I or should I expect them to know that, in the 1930’s, FDR openly admired Mussolini and Hitler?  And how could I possibly expect anyone to know that the NAZI’s openly admitted they got the majority of their ideas from the Woodrow Wilson Administration and the American Progressives/Fabian Socialists?

This is why I refuse to budge in my position.  Not only do I have to explain to people that our nation is traveling the same road as 1930’s Germany, but I have to teach them about the real history of 1930’s Germany.  I am fighting decades of misinformation and indoctrination.  I cannot do that if I avoid the issue at hand.  I must deal with that issue directly, head-on.  But then, I also have to follow my conscience and hold to the truth, and the truth here is that we are traveling the road into darkness.  It may manifest itself in different ways, but the principles, the basic steps in that road toward darkness are the same today as they were in the 1930’s, and in the early 1900’s and all the way back to Babylon.

But there is one more reason I cannot and will not budge in my position.  I do not care if I chase off a large potential audience because I make them feel uncomfortable.  Tough!  Ultimately, what we are discussing here is evil.  Well, I am a child of the Truth and the Light, not darkness, and the Light came not to unite but to separate father and son, mother and daughter.  I will not be ashamed to speak the truth s He has given it to me.  I will stand on the wall and warn those who will hear, and explain it to those who will listen.  Those who will not listen are beyond my ability to reach.  That is His job.  All I can do, all I know to do is to speak the truth, to share what I have learned and what I see and to pray that it is enough to reach those I was intended to reach.  As for the rest… well, they are not my concern.  I’m just a servant, not the Master, and standing where I am standing is what the Master has told me to do.

  1. My heart aches so when I realize they refuse to, or cannot, see the “lifeline” we have thrown them, and there is no way “we” can illuminate for them to “see”.

      Read this book; the parallels between the modern day American Progressives and the nazis social welfare programs are undeniable. Here is part of an economists review with link for the entire review;

      http://economistsview.typepad.com/economistsview/2007/02/hitlers_benefic.html

The provocative power of Götz Aly’s “Hitler’s Beneficiaries,” available in this fine English translation after having created a fierce debate in Germany, is that it seeks to move beyond each of these explanations. That it is not wholly successful does not diminish its intellectual significance as a fresh model for grasping how the Nazis gained such broad support…
In Aly’s view, Nazism secured the compliance of the German people not because of Hitler’s charisma or Goebbels’s propaganda, nor because of its anti-Semitic policies or the Gestapo’s ruthlessness. A majority of Germans were not seduced or scared by the Nazis. On the contrary, their loyalty to the regime was bought and paid for — quite literally so.
According to Aly, who teaches at the University of Frankfurt, millions of care packages of plundered items were sent back home from the occupied territories by Wehrmacht soldiers who were themselves given hearty rations and plenty of disposable cash. Clothing and household objects that had once belonged to Jews were sold at affordable prices at government-organized public auctions, or simply handed out free as emergency relief. And the Nazis also introduced a progressive income tax that shifted a far greater tax burden onto corporations and the very rich.
“Hitler’s Beneficiaries” argues that nothing more than an unremarkable pursuit of self-interest led most Germans to pledge allegiance to the Nazi regime. Germans wanted their children to have nice Christmas gifts. They wanted to set aside money for retirement. They wanted to send a special someone back home … perfumed soap from France. Citizens were sated with decent wages, generous overtime pay and innovative pension plans — that is, through the establishment of a complex, if absolutely amoral, welfare state.
Aly, in short, makes a serious and well-researched attempt to put the “socialism” back in National Socialism. And in so doing, he offers his own explanation for why so many Germans closed their eyes to the systematic expropriation of Jewish property and ultimately to the deportation of their Jewish fellow citizens…

    • Trapper,

I know, and I appreciate where you are — really, I do. I guess people just think I am arrogant or something. they seem to think I enjoy writing this stuff. That often causes me a great deal of pain because of what it means they think of me. I wish I could make them understand that I do not enjoy opening myself to attack from ignorant people. But I can’t not do it. I am compelled to tell people what I see happening.

Oh, how often I wish I could just turn that drive off and just retreat back into my business, which also happens to be my hobby. How much easier and enjoyable life would be. But I can’t stay silent when I see the evil rising all around me. I am compelled to do what I can to explain what I know so that those who do not see what you and I do but who hear the voice of truth will hear, see and turn from the darkness.

        • Trapper,

Words have an impact…..often percolating deep. When a Tide-change happens it often appears to be everywhere spontaneously. But the ideas having been forming over time by many reflecting on the same ideas at the same time.

  2. To All Previous Posts, especially Joe’s excellent Post–I totally agree!
Joe knows that I also am a student of German (Political) History and having resided in Germany in the early days after the war, am familiar with Nazis, (my best friend, until his death last year, was the son of an assistant, SS Lt Colonel, to Hitler’s Principal Photographer, Hoffmann), many still active during this period and educating me during many evening coffee/beer get-to-gethers in their homes and Guesthouses. History is a telling feature of life, we either live it or read about it and adjust our future to reflect what History teaches us. Those of us that live History get along quite well, while others who disregard it flail about their lives trying to achieve some semblance of understanding of what they are missing.

I agree with Texas95 on “Hitler’s Beneficiaries.” I think the best book mentioned is “Dietrich Bonhoeffer.” This Man of God who lived the Nazi inquisition is a true hero. His book can be bought at most used bookstores for $3.00 or less. I strongly encourage everyone to read Bonhoeffer’s story.

Other very informative reads about the 1930’s Nazi rise to power are: “The Lost Life of Eva Braun” by Angela Lambert, “Until The Final Hour” by Traudl Junge (Hitler’s secretary), “Oskar Schindler” (about his life) by David M. Crowe. These books take you into the heart (personal activities) of the Nazi regime on a daily time frame.

Thank you Utah for the space to comment!

    • Also, this one (and pay attention to the similarity in the description and our current society/political environment):

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Nazi Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.

A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition.

Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming–yet wholly sinister–Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror.

  3. nationalism, religious racism, and a recent past featuring vast impoverishment were also primary components of nazism, Joe, and you get a 2 out of three on that score. Without your breed of of religious intolerance, withouth the sort of mindless jingoism in which you specialize, nazism would be impossible. I am sure Hitler appreciates your efforts on behalf of his vision, because you are the closet nazi, Joe.

      • Augger, the day you come in here ready to discuss any subject in a reasonable and intelligent manner, willing to seek the truth, and seeking that truth no matter where it takes you, then your ears will be sated.
I see no danger of that happening, as you and your islamophobic buddies refuse to acknowledge anything remotely positive about Islam or its adherents. No group is as evil as others want them to be, and the longer you idiots rail against reality, the stupider you look to people with real American values.

        • Greg, if you are not permitted, or morally unable to speak of well documented incidents of Islamic intolerance, then by all means just say so.

          I will understand, really.

Otherwise, you’ll just remain a hypocrite in the eyes of everyone who reads this exchange.

          • is that your bar? if muslims do it, it excuses anyone else who practices intolerance?
I say be intolerant with others, especially American muslims, who most likely came here to escape the intolerance and hatred of which you speak.,

            • “is that your bar? if muslims do it, it excuses anyone else who practices intolerance?”

No Greg, that is not my bar. Nice try though, but I am well aware that you are much better at apologetic arguments when it comes to religious discussions, than you are at polemics. You have no qualms with bashing any religion, except Islam. Does that make you Christianophobe, xenophobe? Why do you think the Christians came to this country?

Seems to be that you are a skilled practitioner of mindless jingoism yourself.

Thats the litmus test that you fail in your search for rational discourse.

                • “Greg, if you are not permitted, or morally unable to speak of well documented incidents of Islamic intolerance, then by all means just say so. I will understand, really. Otherwise, you’ll just remain a hypocrite in the eyes of everyone who reads this exchange.”

Greg, sapient thought does not occur naturally in your gene pool. You want to cast me as “obtuse” when I clearly gave you a gateway and a free pass on ignoring Islamic intolerance … and all you had to do was admit you were either not permitted to speak out.

You have a warped sense of the word “obtuse”.

“You are unworthy of my time”

Yeah, I can live with that. My work on this subject is already done. Feels mighty un-nerving to be genuinely exposed again, doesn’t it? 🙂

You “have a nice life, anyway” yourself Greg. Allahsmalladic.

    • Nationalism, Religious Racism and a recent past featuring vast impoverishment are the hallmarks of virtually every mohameddans State throughout the 20th Century.

Thus islamo-Fasism has become the prevailing political wind blowing from those islamic “paradises”.

        • “And we don’t want that sort of thinking in this country, do we?”

Then why do you practice it?

        • This is the Reply from a proponent of the islamo-fascists who are currently living in America.

They are actively trying to undermine…..by their own admission….their own words….Please view the Video by Steven Emerson..*Jihad in America..The Grand Deception *. It shows video and text going back from the early 1990,s up to 2012.

This is a comment from a Person who has at times lauded Islamic beheadings and/or been silent about the nonstop muslim violence.

The current muslim(mohameddan) thought and feeling within the muslims in America is that they will take it down from within and those who are not Sharia will be absrorbed, killed or as you see from his comment…the “peaceful” option will be for us …”To LEAVE ” our native born country. I strongly URGE Americans to find out what and who these people really are…..in their own Words…..investigate, read them, look at their videos……

          • I KNOW Muslims, how’s that for research? I know that there are many Muslims who want to kill me, but all the people that have tried were native-born.

There are those who call for our destruction, but the average Muslim just wants to raise his family and be left alone.

But we don’t leave them alone….

In 2001, Graham stood by remarks he made about Islam at the dedication of a chapel in North Carolina. The God of Islam is not the same God. He’s not the son of God of the Christian or Judeo-Christian faith. It’s a different God, and I believe it is a very evil and wicked religion.”

Rep, Peter King- “Police have to be in the community, they have to build up as many sources as they can, and they have to realize that the threat is coming from the Muslim community and increase surveillance there,” King, a New York Republican, told the National Review.

former general Jerry Boykin….Since he retired, Boykin has become an ordained minister and has been a regular speaker at Religious Right and right-wing events, where he has not only demonized Muslims, but also claimed that since Islam is not a religion but a “totalitarian way of life,” and since Muslims are, according to Boykin, under an “obligation to destroy our Constitution,” American Muslims are not protected under the First Amendment’s guarantees of religious liberty. More explicitly, he said there should be no mosques allowed in America.

Now, I offer these quotes as evidence that muslims are denigrated and objectified by our political, miltary, and spiritual leaders. I imagine you agree with the people whom I have quoted here, but that is not the point.

Imagine being in a minority, and hearing quotes like these aimed at you. Aren’t you going to go into wagon-circling mode? There would be a tendency to congregate with one’s own creed and kin, less inclination to mix and mingle with a possibly hostile crowd in the shops and restaurants. This results in more stereotyping, more angry stares, and even less intermingling.

The false impressions are not one-sided; word among the muslims, in our area at least, is that Americans are unclean, and we all drink alcohol to excess. I don’t know, is there any other way to drink it?

            • OMG, Don, Augger,

Melfamy “knows Muslims,” so — suddenly — the people he knows are the representatives of a religion with more than a billion individuals and — somehow — they have erased a 1300+ year history of violence. Whoda thunk it possible.

then again, he could just be another stubborn and ignorant apologist. 😉

              • I know you, Joe, you are a bright young man, how did you and Utah come to be so stupid on the Muslim issue?
I know your points, and you ignore mine, so this is just my thoughts on why you are so afraid of Muslims.

!) their religion makes for stronger adherents. How many christians would fly a jet into the Kaaba? I think suicide is sick, killing innocents is sick, and the Koran forbids both. But you ignore those verses. It’s not the religion, Joe; we’ve been mucking with the Middle East for 80 years, They resent our presence. to put it lightly.
2)You can’t get over having fought them. I get that; I know many damaged vets from the Vietnam era. Help is out there, swallow your pride, jerk, and ask for it.
                3) You are too proud to admit error, so you tie yourself in philosophical knots, trying to reconcile your hatred with the reality of the situation. Calling James a liar, wasn’t that an example of your overused 190-degree-rule? After all, you were defending a piece that was, as usual for dusty, a fabrication.
                4) you believe in the endtimes, that xtians will win. The Koran says THEY will win. In other words, you hate them(yes, you do) the way the Saints hate the Falcons, they are rivals for the Ring, and must be destroyed.

                • Greg,

We’re not the ones who are ignorant about Islam — you are. How did you come to be so naive and to reject recorded history?

The truth about Islam is simple, and it is stated in Muhammad’s own words. When you reject what Muhammad said, then you might as well be telling us we are stupid because we do not believe you when you tell us the sky is green, grass is blue, sand is wet and the water is dry.

                  • Your deliberate misreading of the Koran is abominable, Joe, and you know yours is not the only interpretation, not even widely accepted except by the haters and cowards.
Joe, I know it is easier to shoot something than to understand it, but you are getting intellectually lazy to discern the truth.

                    • Greg,

Your willful ignorance is the issue, not what you claim is an interpretation. Muhammad said to judge his words by his deeds. His words were that of war, his deeds of war and genocide. There is no question here, other than that of apologists such as yourself.

As for your claim that my view is not widely accepted, that is another ignorant argument. It was by Muhammad’s original followers, so what YOU see as the “true” Islam is to Muhammad an abomination of his religion. Just as those calling themselves Christian yet embracing gay marriage and female preachers are an abomination to theirs.

Finally, it is a joke that YOU would call me intellectually lazy when you have a long and illustrious history of proving your intellectual dishonesty. This is a case where your character — as demonstrated by your actions — discredits you.

                    • Joe, you defend a liar, you publish lies and disotrted facts! One day, you are going to look into your mirror and see yourself for the jingoistic, angry fear-monger that you are.

                    • So, in other words, you don’t care what Muhammad said, YOU “know” what Islam is better than he.

How “open-minded” of you (for as long as you get to keep your head, anyway)

                    • Me Lie?! That’s coming from the guy who has never ONCE refuted me — NOT ONCE!

Greg, every HONEST reader here knows that I have made my case and you simply cannot accept it. That speaks more to your character than to mine.

                    • No, Joe, everyone is tired of arguing with you, so they acquiesce. You are just a little man full of hate who cannot stand to be wrong.

                    • Then why is it you have NEVER provided support for your assertions? All you do is assert your opinion then call names when you are proven wrong by people who quote the original sources.

If that makes me “small,” then I hope to get smaller still. 🙂

                    • Another lie, Joe, have provided plenty of proof plenty of sources, all you can come up with is what glenn beck said, or call yourself a source, which would be funny if you didn’t mean it.

                    • “Your deliberate misreading of the Koran is abominable, Joe, and you know yours is not the only interpretation, not even widely accepted except by the haters and cowards. Joe, I know it is easier to shoot something than to understand it, but you are getting intellectually lazy to discern the truth.”

Ok Greg, you sold me, but I need to know more so I can accurately accommodate your perspective. Below is some of the verses in the Quran which troubles me the most. I read them specifically as written without adding, or subtracting from the words at all. I am interested if you read the same thing, or if you have a different interpretation, and if so … what does it mean to you.

                      Thanks in advance.

O Prophet! Make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites. Be harsh with them. Their ultimate abode is hell, a hapless journey’s end. – 9:73

                    • The Koran is a more historical document than the Bible, which is full of inaccuracies due to its publication by committee.

The Utterances of the Mahound that you have generously provided are his exhortations to his troops before various battles OF HIS TIME!; they are not commands to kill all unbelievers, Augger, or why would there be any jews in Iran, Christians in Egypt, or why would Morocco be the first country to recognize the US?

On the other hand your God saved a whore who betrayed her people to the Hebrew army, and they went on a killing spree. Your God likes to see all the enemies of the Hebrew land-grab writhing on the ground, babies and livestock included.

I think all religions are equal parts ethical admonitions and superstitious bullshit. But the Koran at least encourages diversity of spiritual thought. How a religion gets practiced is beyond our control, but the terrorists are not the ones who have it right.

                    • WOW! Greg, you make more and more stupid comments every time you try to DIG your way out of the whole you put yourself in.

1 — The Bible is actually the MOST accurate history book we have. Not only has it NEVER been shown to be wrong, it has actually guided archeologists to finds where the ONLY information we had was found in the Bible — and they found EXACTLY what the Bible said they would, EXACTLY where it said.

2 — What you call “inaccuracies” are always caused by bad translations and ignorant people who do not know and understand the Hebrew language and culture.

3 — The Qur’an is NOT accurate in ANYTHING! The oldest copies do not agree with each other at all. The Qur’an was written several hundred years after Muhammad died, and then, IT WAS COMPILED BY COMMITTEE!

Greg, you are not just ignorant, your are a foolish man who has NO idea about which he speaks — NONE!

                    • Idiot! The Egyptians did not enslave the Hebrews, Persia did. Noah did not free them, Cyrus the Great did!
There is no evidence of any large party wandering in the desert for 40 years, and archaeologists say that defies all probability.
Probably th only true thing in the Bible is the bloodthirst with which the hebrews took their promised land.
Jesus did not come back to life, that is utter BS! He was just a dumb revolutionary to stupid to stay out of Roman hands.

Funny how you rely on the Koran, then callit unreliable, you are such an obvious hypocrite, how do you look at yourself in the mirror?

                    • Egypt DID enslave the Hebrews — BEFORE Persia. It is in their hieroglyphs (idiot)

If you wonder in the desert, and you only have tents and are living off manna, THERE WON’T BE EVIDENCE! (idiot)

There are more than 600 EYE WITNESSES to Christ’s resurrection. the Pharisees did NOT dispute His return. In a U.S. court of law, THIS IS PROOF OF ACTUAL OCCURRENCE! ATHEIST and LAWYER, Lee Strobel, set out to prove your assertion and decided he could not. In fact, he said he could win the case in court all day long. this is why he is now a Christian. (idiot)

I do not rely on the Qur’an, I merely cite it. the funny part is how it PROVES YOU ARE AN IGNORANT FOOL! We ALL see you have NEVER refuted Muhammad’s words — NOT ONCE!

                    • Now you join the ranks of Holocaust deniers? Perfect! 🙂

YOU read and weep — DENIER! HATER!

Passover proof lies in Egyptian hieroglyphs

The Exodus out of Egypt: Archaeology Generally Confirms Biblical History

Biblical Archaeology: Evidence of the Exodus from Egypt

                      Exodus Evidence/Timeline

Satan’s children have ALWAYS denied God and God’s people. Why would we expect anything different from the source you are citing? But then, by arguing there were no Jews in Egypt at this time is just another straw man argument so common among deniers. Naturally there is no evidence of Jews at this time: there were no Jews until after Judah had been established. But the people we know as HEBREWS ARE in the historic record in Egypt at this time — which is exactly what the Bible records.

                    • Boys, the Dead Sea Scrolls are readily available through Google.

Greg, I advise you not to read them for yourself though. I’m not sure you could handle the disappointment of it all.

Joe – The fact that the Nazis vied with their Marxist rivals the Communists for control of Germany during the 1920’s and early 1930’s does not change the reality that both groups sprang from the same Collectivist forebears, Jeremy Bentham and the British Utilitarians and Hegel. Nor does it alter the fact that the Progressive movement in America has the same common history and goals. Whether it travels under the name Progressivism in America, Communism in Russia and China, Fascism in Italy and Spain, Socialism in England and France or Nazism in Germany, Collectivism’s basic beliefs run contrary to everything that has created in America the greatest force for freedom and individual liberty in the history of the world, while providing her own citizens with the highest standard of living on the planet. America now suffers under the tyranny of a Progressive President whose every policy has been calculated to attack the values and beliefs framed and delineated in our Constitution, Declaration and Bill of Rights. Our Dear Leader’s goals have been pursued by the henchmen who dominate the bloated Federal bureaucracy that has been designed to cow and spy on America’s own citizens. You are spot-on, Joe. The parallels become more frightening every day.

  5. Thats unfortunate, Joe. This stuff isn’t really all that difficult to comprehend or understand. This isn’t like Bigfoot or UFOs, where murky evidence gives us a bunch of ifs and maybes on a good day. All one has to do is observe current events and their facts, then crack open a history book (actually, even that is becoming somewhat leery, as our history books are more prone to vilify the United States and support Marxist indoctrination).

My best explanation is denial. The powers that be that have been ushering in American Progressivism under the Obama administration, and all of their awestruck supporters, have too much at stake to actually entertain these ideas; so of course people are going to view this stuff as pure delusion, lunacy, or speculation.

I know I have tried to make these parallels in discussion as well with my rather liberal friends here in the Seattle area (since no other type of person exists here). Same thing, minus the love and concern.
