This past week, some ignorant remarks about the Constitution were made by Representative Shelia Jackson Lee, to wit:
“…how well it is that we have lasted some 400 years, operating under a Constitution that clearly defines what is constitutional and what is not.”
Ignoring the tautological fact that the Constitution defines what is constitutional because it is the…well, you know…the Constitution, the gaffe most chose to focus on was the 400 year comment – but the learned Ms. Jackson Lee is not alone in her confusion with the time/space continuum – in 2010, Ezra Klein, founding member of the Juicebox Media Mafia, issued this remarkable statement of idiocy:
“My friends on the right don’t like to hear this, but the Constitution is not a clear document. Written 100 years ago, when America had 13 states and very different problems, it rarely speaks directly to the questions we ask it.”
100 years old? 400? Really? What’s a few centuries among friends? Most people will take both of these statements as simple ignorance of history, but in my estimation, they reveal another, far greater issue.
They expose the weakness of statists and how they seek to satisfy that weakness through state control.
It is clear that Klein sees the Constitution as lacking because “it rarely speaks directly to the questions we ask it.” Well, Ezra – that is not the purpose of the Constitution. The Constitution was drafted for the governance of a moral population, a population capable of self-regulation and the self-governance brought about through the understanding and respect of natural laws and natural rights, of which Jefferson wrote “…to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them”.
In a communist state, Natural Law concepts are absent and therefore the state assumes the role of “Nature and of Nature’s God”, creating legislation, rules and regulations to govern every aspect of human interaction. Counter to her assertion that she thinks the Constitution “clearly defines what is constitutional and what is not”, Ms. Jackson Lee has proven time and time again that she joins “journalist” Ezra Klein as part and parcel of the “progressive” movement, a movement that is attempting to define our 100 to 400 year old constitution in any way that advances their legalistic Utopian state.
