This saying may be better known in military circles, but it is still a principle of logic: when someone threatens you, always take what they say at face value. Had we done this in the 1930’s, then we could have read “Mein Kampf” and we would have known exactly what Hitler had planned for the world and — maybe — the world would have moved to stop him. But we did not listen, and those who did refused to take Hitler at his word. Russia threatened to take America from within. We did not listen. In fact, in the 1960’s, we ridiculed those who were trying to get us to take the Soviet threat seriously.
