There seems to be a little “worm turning” going on.
I’m beginning to see progressives showing some worry that the dumpster fire they started with the Mueller “Russia Collusion” investigation is getting out of the dumpster and is starting to spread toward the Obama Legacy Forest. The “scandal free” memes are rising once again, polls are being reported about how much people miss Obama for his “integrity” and all the black marks on the Obama years are actively being whitewashed and sanitized for your protection.
The Dems are making a lot of noise about how Trump ordering the DOJ to investigate certain things is a “crisis” – which is interesting because they seem to be saying that the DOJ has always been “independent” while the evidence shows that Obama used it as his personal playground. Under Obama, it appears the Holder/Lynch DOJ served the role of mafia leg-breaker/enforcer/snitch to protect Democrats and go after their enemies.
I want to turn the clock back to 2014 when the then AG Eric “Steadman” Holder said:
“There is a vast amount of discretion that a president has — and more specifically that an attorney general has,” Holder responded. “But that discretion has to be used in an appropriate way so that your acting consistent with the aims of the statute but at the same time making sure that you are acting in a way that is consistent with our values, consistent with the Constitution and protecting the American people.”
Aside from the absolute arrogance present in this statement and the assumption that the President and the AG have almost king-like powers to decide what laws mean and how and when to enforce them, I want you to focus on one particularly disturbing and important extract from Holder’s statement – this one:
“…at the same time making sure that you are acting in a way that is consistent with our values, consistent with the Constitution and protecting the American people.”
We already know that like Woodrow Wilson before them, Obama and Holder saw the Constitution as an impediment to the progressive agenda and as an obstacle to be worked around, not obeyed. We also know that “protecting the American people” means “protecting some of the American people, especially the ones who are on board with the Democrat agenda.” The especially frightening part is that they were going to make “sure that you are acting in a way that is consistent with our values…”
That seems benign enough – values are a good thing, aren’t they?
Well, like every crumb that falls from the “progressives” collective pie hole, you have to understand the context to understand the meaning. Holder’s statement reminded me of a 2004 interview Obama did with Cathleen Falsani of the Chicago Sun-Times – originally reported by none other than our very own James Taranto):
FALSANI: “Do you believe in sin?”
OBAMA: “Yes.”
FALSANI: “What is sin?”
OBAMA: “Being out of alignment with my values.”
This exchange is far more revealing than was intended. Note that Obama said “my values” and not “God’s Laws”. That is a very important distinction for one simple reason – what progressives call “values” are often social constructs, fungible and malleable faddish beliefs that can change based on the need for them to fit into a certain desired perspective. Progressives allow their morality to exist on a sliding scale so they can be the popular kid in the class, no matter what the issue may be. Pinning down a progressive is like trying to hold Jello in your bare hands.
True values, like principles, are immutable.
So if being out of line with Obama’s and Holder’s “values” are the equivalent of sin and Holder, Lynch and Obama could determine what sin is, we are well and truly screwed as a country – for if your sin is defined as opposition to my values – and my values are changeable – there is literally no action I can take that isn’t explainable or excusable. There is literally nothing I can’t define as moral in my quest to defeat you.
And viewed in that light, it would make sense that any power at Obama’s disposal should not be brought to bear against the sinner Trump in favor of the anointed Hillary.
If all anchors to true values – the Constitution being the primary definition of them where government involvement and power resides – are fungible to the whims of the personal values of a President and Attorney General, we are truly living witnesses to the transformation of a representative republic into a sort of monarchy by proxy where “progressive” politicians can decide what the laws mean and change them as they see fit.
Just remember that to a progressive, being arbitrary and capricious isn’t a negative, it is a “value”.
