Racism is alive in America. Thanks to Colbert King at the Washington Post, we know this to be a fact – because as he states, there are racial slurs being used in conversations on social media about Obama:
Moody found that many Facebook hate pages also focused on cultural narratives. Some photos depict Obama or his family as animals, particularly apes. One picture showed male and female apes holding an infant ape with Obama’s face superimposed on it.
But it doesn’t stop there.
Last month, a 21-year-old Miami college student was sentenced to three years’ probation for posting threats against Obama on Facebook.
Read his Feb. 21 posting: “Who wants to help assassinate Obummer while hes at UM this week?”
On Feb. 23, the day Obama spoke at his school, the student wrote: “If anyone going to UM to see Obama today, get ur phones out and record. Cause at any moment im gonna put a bullet through his head and u don’t wanna miss that? Youtube!”
And just so you know, apparently noticing that Michelle Obama is fat is also racist – this according to The Atlantic– doesn’t matter that Mobama’s “do as I say, not as I do health crusade”, makes her own adherence to such a program relevant.
In the Post article, Mr. King asks:
How many like the Mecklenburg Republicans and this college student assassin-wannabe are out there?
What are they going to do on Election Day?
More important, what are you going to do?
It seems that Mr. King is demanding that people vote for Obama simply because he is black and there are some whites who are racist. Are there white people who voted against Obama because he is black…you bet there are. Are there black people who voted for him because he is black…that answer is a provable “yes” as well.
If voting against a candidate solely due to his race is racist, isn’t supporting a candidate purely due to his race actually, you know, also racist by definition?
If we are going to examine racism against Obama, we have to also examine black racism…
Well, Mr. King only needs to go to the website of the New Black Panther Party and have a look at what is there on their Twitter feed. Some will say that the NBPP doesn’t represent all blacks but as long as Stormfront – as alluded to in the Atlantic article I linked to above ( I won’t link to the morons as Stormfront, google them if you like) – is trotted out to smear whites, referencing the NBPP is just as legitimate because Stormfront does not speak for the majority of whites either. Just as Stormfront seeks a “white” nation, the NBPP seeks a “black” nation.
As far as disparaging imagery and threats being unique to this President, his memory is also perilously limited.
Mr. King so easily forgets that there was actually a so called “high concept” made in 2006, during Bush’s second term, that fantasized about his assassination. As far as death threats to Bush, these were common themes of protests during his administration as chronicled at Zomblog here, as were images of Bush being beheaded, hanged or as Hitler or a chimp – just google “images of Bush as Hitler” and “images of Bush as a monkey” and you can see the public displays for yourself. I guess Mr. King also forgets the “Kill Bush” tee shirts that CafePress had to take off their website…
In Mr. King’s logic the same caricatures must be interpreted as more offensive simply due to the race of the person caricatured, i.e. Bush as a chimp = acceptable political protest, Obama as a chimp = racist.
Colbert King engages in the most cynical form of racism, that Obama is being judged on his race rather than his performance and it is impossible for any other condition to be true. If he fails, it is because he is black; therefore if he succeeds, it must follow that it is because he is black. He is not to be judged on his merits and faults because he is shielded by race.
This is not a tu quoque argument to excuse racism – if we are going to examine racism as it applies to Obama, by all means, let’s examine it – but if the liberal contingent are going to use it as a balm to cure all political ills, a tool to delegitimize all political differences, then the discussion isn’t really about racism, is it?
For some liberals, all things related to Obama are relegated to race because of his race. When he loses on November 6th, the defeat will be because he is black, not because he is a failure. The left must rationalize this in terms that they can understand because they cannot accept the truth that their policies are failures.
Everything is about race whether it is or not – just ask Chris Matthews at MSNBC.
As Mr. King laments:
Ah, life in post-racial America.
